When I started playing disc golf last summer, I went to my local REI and purchased a starter kit from Innova. What I know now that I didn’t know then is all three discs in the starter kit–the Leopard, Shark and Aviar–weigh in at just 150 grams.
Had I know this at the time, it would not have mattered. All I knew was I wanted to play and here were three new discs–a fairway driver, a mid-range and a putter–neatly bundled in a $30 pack. “Buy, go and throw!” was all I was thinking.
Nine months later, I still throw the Shark and my trusty old Leopard. But the putter had to go. At just 150 grams it was untrustworthy, to say the least. In fact, on a windy day at DC Dan’s new course in the Columbia River Gorge earlier this spring, I ended up four and five putting a few holes, as my Aviar went wherever the wind wanted to take it.
Thankfully, I now throw a 175 gram Yeti Pro at baskets near and far. The feeling of confidence this hefty, grippy putter instills is a game changer. The disc goes where it’s thrown! And isn’t that what we ask from our disc golf equipment?
